{"id":15681,"date":"2017-10-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/communiques\/murder-of-a-coptic-priest-in-cairo-bishop-gollnischs-press-release\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T07:03:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T07:03:45","slug":"murder-of-a-coptic-priest-in-cairo-bishop-gollnischs-press-release","status":"publish","type":"communique","link":"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/en\/communiques\/murder-of-a-coptic-priest-in-cairo-bishop-gollnischs-press-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Murder of a Coptic Priest in Cairo: Bishop Gollnisch\u2019s Press Release"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019\u0152uvre d\u2019Orient expresses its deep sorrow over the murder of Father Samaan Shehata on Thursday, October 12, by an Islamist terrorist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 51-year-old Coptic Orthodox priest, a native of the impoverished province of Bani Suif, was visiting Cairo accompanied by Father Bayman Moftah, who was also injured in the attack and remains in the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his speeches delivered on Friday, April 28, during his trip to Egypt, Pope Francis called for the fight <em>against<\/em> <em>\u201call forms of violence, vengeance, and hatred committed in the name of religion or in the name of God.\u201d<\/em> While it now seems certain that this killer, who is currently in prison, did not act alone, the \u0152uvre d\u2019Orient condemns the religious and cultural fanaticism that, through its premeditated violence, targets Copts in an effort to undermine national unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the recent past, Christians in Egypt have all too often faced acts of violence.
