In the 9th century, following the Bulgarian invasion, the Romanians abandoned the Latin rite in favor of the Byzantine rite and came under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1697, to protect himself from Calvinist proselytism in Transylvania, the Metropolitan of Alba Iulia decided to restore the union with Rome, which had been severed at the time of the schism of 1054. He convened a synod to discuss the recognition of the authority of the Pope of Rome. The Act of Union was signed by the entire synod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 250 years of prosperity, on December 1, 1948, the Romanian Greek Catholic Church was outlawed by the communist government, with the tacit consent of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Bishops, a large number of priests, monks, and laypeople were executed or imprisoned. The Church would survive for more than 40 years in the \u201ccatacombs\u201d in Romania, while a few \u201ccenters of resistance\u201d remained in Rome, Paris, Munich, and Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the fall of communism in Romania in 1989, the Romanian Greek Catholic Church was reborn in its country of origin and throughout communities in European cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Romanian Greek Catholic Church is a major archiepiscopal church. <strong>His Beatitude Claudiu-Lucian Pop<\/strong> has been its major archbishop since November 7, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek Catholic community in Romania has about 700,000 members and faces a complex relationship with the Orthodox Church, particularly regarding the restitution of its property confiscated in 1948.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oeuvre-orient.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/ATT00002-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Romanian people came into being, both ethnically and spiritually, during the Roman conquest of Dacia (101\u2013105).
