{"id":16057,"date":"2026-08-05T09:41:46","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T09:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/the-syriac-catholic-church\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T09:41:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T09:41:46","slug":"the-syriac-catholic-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/en\/the-syriac-catholic-church\/","title":{"rendered":"The Syriac Catholic Church"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Syriac Church is one of the branches of the Church of Antioch<\/strong>, whose apostolic see was established in the year 37 A.D. by Saint Peter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning with the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the Greeks of Antioch adopted the Chalcedonian Christology, while <strong>the Syriacs<\/strong> gradually <strong>adopted Monophysite Christology<\/strong> and completely broke away from Constantinople in 553. This branch, distinct from the Patriarchate of Antioch, came to be known as \u201cJacobite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 8th century, the Arabs arrived in Mesopotamia and Syria.<strong> The Syriac Church served as a bridge for the exchange of knowledge between the Hellenistic and Arab worlds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persecuted by the Byzantines in the 11th century, the Arabs in the 10th century, the Mongols in the 13th century, and Tamerlane, it drew closer to Rome in 1557, <strong>adopted the name Syriac Catholic Church in 1662<\/strong>, but the union would not be finalized until 1783.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Catholic Patriarchate, currently based in Lebanon, has been led by <strong>His Beatitude Ignace Youssef III Younan<\/strong> since 2009 and has more than 100,000 faithful in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, as well as 50,000 in the diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syriac Orthodox Church has 750,000 members and is led by <strong>His Holiness Ignatius Ephrem II Karim,<\/strong> who resides in Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oeuvre-orient.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sa-B%C3%A9atitude-Mar-Ignace-You.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:562px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Syriac Church is one of the branches of the Church of Antioch, whose apostolic see was established in the year 37 A.D. by Saint Peter.
