{"id":16091,"date":"2026-08-04T07:29:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T07:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/the-daughters-of-charity\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T07:29:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T07:29:47","slug":"the-daughters-of-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/en\/the-daughters-of-charity\/","title":{"rendered":"The Daughters of Charity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul are a community founded in 1633 by Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac to serve the poor throughout the world, particularly through education, healthcare, and social service, without living a cloistered life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that time, most nuns lived in cloistered convents. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac pioneered a new way of life: consecrated women who lived in community but were sent out into the streets, villages, hospitals, and schools to serve the poorest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Vincent summed up their vocation with a phrase that has become famous: \u201cTheir monastery will be the homes of the sick; their cell, a rented room; their chapel, the parish church; their cloister, the streets of the city. \u201d This was a significant innovation: the Daughters of Charity became the first large, non-cloistered women\u2019s community in the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the French Revolution, religious congregations were abolished, and the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity was dispersed. Many of the sisters returned to their families or continued their work in secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then witness a sort of \u201cVincentian diaspora,\u201d with the case of Besan\u00e7on being the most emblematic. Saint Jeanne-Antide Thouret joined the Daughters of Charity in 1787. The Revolution scattered the Society; unable to rejoin an organization that no longer officially existed, she founded the <strong>Sisters of Charity of Besan\u00e7on<\/strong> in Besan\u00e7on in 1799<strong>.<\/strong> She explicitly embraced the spirit, rules, and mission of Saint Vincent de Paul. Other examples can be observed, such as with the <strong>Daughters of Charity of Saint Francis of Assisi,<\/strong> where the term \u201cDaughters of Charity\u201d was adopted because it had become almost a model for women\u2019s apostolic work: community life, service to the poor, teaching, and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Concordat of 1801, the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity gradually reestablished itself and experienced a new surge of growth. Other congregations, such as those in Besan\u00e7on and Saint Francis of Assisi, continued to maintain their own autonomy, constitutions, and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Daughters of Charity have expanded across all continents, particularly in several countries in the Middle East: Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Israel, and the Palestinian territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their general house and their place of worship, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, are located in Paris at 140 Rue du Bac (7th arrondissement).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click HERE to read the article on the Congregation of the Mission (the Lazarists)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Below are two examples of projects that the \u0152uvre has supported since its inception<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"contenu-image contenu-image--image-texte\" data-component=\"15-contenu-image\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__inner\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__media\">\n\t\t\t\t<img class=\"contenu-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Filles-de-la-charite-hopital-francais-de-nazareth.jpeg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\">\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__body\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"contenu-image__title\">The French Hospital in Nazareth<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"contenu-image__filet\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__text\"><p>The Christians of the town of Nazareth urged the sisters to settle there. But they lacked the necessary resources. Finally, a charitable person offered sufficient funds for the foundation. The residents of Nazareth, in their eagerness, even went so far as to send a petition to the Holy Father to hasten the arrival of the Daughters of Charity. It was in the final days of 1897 that Bishop Piavi, Patriarch of Jerusalem, formally expressed to Sister Sion his desire to see the sisters go to Nazareth.<\/p>\n<p>Four sisters, a rented house, and 17 beds: such were the humble beginnings. A clinic for the poor and sick was quickly added. Very soon, home visits were also organized in Nazareth and the surrounding villages. \u201cIn 1905, the house became self-sufficient. Faced with the growing number of patients, a large plot of land was purchased to build the hospital, which was inaugurated in 1910,\u201d reports the Provincial Superior of the Near East. The hospital continues its mission.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"contenu-image__motif\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/wp-content\/themes\/oeuvre-orient\/assets\/images\/icones\/croix-jerusalem.svg\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\">\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"contenu-image contenu-image--text-image\" data-component=\"15-contenu-image\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__inner\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__media\">\n\t\t\t\t<img class=\"contenu-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oeuvre-orient.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Fille-de-la-charite-ecole-saint-vincent-baskinta.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\">\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__body\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"contenu-image__title\">The Community Center at Saint-Vincent School<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"contenu-image__filet\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"contenu-image__text\"><p>The Sisters of Charity of Besan\u00e7on have been serving at this mission in Baskinta, Lebanon, since 1904. The first building constructed served as a social and medical center. In 1950, the construction of a free elementary school made it possible for children from Baskinta and the surrounding villages to attend school. Later, a middle school and a technical high school opened their doors. In 1964, the congregation established a social welfare institution that provided a free boarding school for orphaned girls and those in need. The boarding students study alongside the day students but receive additional support.
