Based on this conviction, L\u2019\u0152uvre d\u2019Orient and the Federation of Catholic Family Associations in Europe (FAFCE) co-organized a conference at the European Parliament, under the patronage of General Christophe Gomart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This meeting highlighted the vital role of Ukrainian families in the country&#x27;s resilience and in laying the groundwork for future peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Families: The Pillars of Ukrainian Society in Times of War<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the start of the Russian invasion, Ukrainian families have faced tremendous hardships. Yet they continue to play an irreplaceable role in the life of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The speakers emphasized that families are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>indispensable moral support for soldiers on the front lines;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>a particularly vulnerable population that needs to be protected, especially women and children;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>a key factor in social cohesion and collective resilience;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>a key player in postwar reconstruction and peacebuilding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Christophe Gomart reiterated this fundamental reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00ab Dans les moments difficiles, la famille est une source essentielle de soutien et de refuge pendant et apr\u00e8s la guerre. \u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faith, Hope, and Love: The Foundations of Ukrainian Resilience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The testimonies heard at this conference demonstrated how the resilience of the Ukrainian people draws its strength from the theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bishop Radoslaw Zmitrowicz, the Catholic bishop of Kamianets-Podilskyi, emphasized the importance of families remaining united and continuing to live out their faith despite the hardships of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family thus emerges as a special place for spiritual transmission, mutual support, and inner renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Moving Story of a Ukrainian Refugee Mother<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liudmyla Levytska, who sought refuge in Belgium with her young son, shared her experiences of exile and war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recalling images of her destroyed school and the upheaval in her daily life, she shared a story marked by deep hope:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00ab La guerre nous a appris \u00e0 vivre aujourd\u2019hui. \u00c0 ne pas remettre la vie \u00e0 plus tard. \u00c0 appr\u00e9cier les choses simples : la lumi\u00e8re dans la maison, le calme d\u2019une nuit, le sourire d\u2019un enfant. \u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His remarks highlighted not only the human cost of the conflict but also the ability of families to hold on to what matters most despite the trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hope for Christian Couples in Ukraine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Victoria and Dmytro Demedyuk, members of the Teams of Our Lady in Ukraine, shared their testimony of trust in God despite the uncertainties of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They emphasized how faith helps families get through difficult times:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00ab Nous remettons notre vie entre les mains du Seigneur Dieu et acceptons sa volont\u00e9 en tout ce qu\u2019il a pr\u00e9par\u00e9 pour nous. \u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through their testimonies, they have shown that family stability remains a source of peace and hope for all of Ukrainian society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L\u2019\u0152uvre d\u2019Orient\u2019s Long-Standing Commitment to Ukraine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antoine Renard, former president of the FAFCE and board member of L\u2019\u0152uvre d\u2019Orient, highlighted the long-standing ties between the association and Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since its founding following the Treaty of Paris in 1856, L\u2019\u0152uvre d\u2019Orient has supported Christians in the East and in Eastern Europe. Its support for Ukraine has grown over the decades, particularly for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and has taken on special significance since the start of the war in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the organization continues its humanitarian work among civilian populations, displaced families, parishes, schools, and religious communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rebuilding Ukraine: Justice, Religious Freedom, and the Future of Families<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his remarks, Antoine Renard also called on European institutions to take action to pave the way for a just and lasting peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several priorities were highlighted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>facilitate the return of the 19,500 Ukrainian children deported by the Russian authorities;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>recognize religious persecution as a state policy directed against certain communities;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>fully incorporate religious freedom into future peace agreements;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>to protect Ukraine&#x27;s cultural and spiritual heritage;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>address the demographic crisis that threatens the country&#x27;s future;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>support reconstruction projects that benefit the entire population, including those led by organizations inspired by the social doctrine of the Church.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cKeep Your Spirits Up\u201d: A Message of Hope for Ukraine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Ukraine, where he was traveling at the time of the conference, Bishop Hugues de Woillemont, executive director of L\u2019\u0152uvre d\u2019Orient, sent a message to the participants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00ab Haut les c\u0153urs. Ce que vous avez d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait est hors norme.
