Christian communities have lived in the southern and eastern parts of the Mediterranean for two thousand years. They witnessed the rise of Islam thirteen centuries ago and have forged relationships with Muslims that have at times been fruitful and at other times difficult.
Believers often act as “cultural ambassadors.”
These Christians are not the descendants of the Crusaders or the colonizers; they are the Christians of Pentecost. As witnesses to a rich cultural diversity and as peacemakers, they are committed citizens dedicated to serving their country.
The faith of Eastern Christians is a faith in action, in the name of Christ and the Gospel. These works are often carried out by priests and men and women religious, assisted by laypeople who care for others and educate them to the best of their ability.
