L’Œuvre d’Orient has learned with horror and profound sadness of the death of Father Pierre el-Raï, a Maronite priest from Qlayaa, who was killed in a bombardment. He was killed at his home by an artillery shell that also wounded four other people. This shelling occurred after an earlier shell had damaged a house in the village and residents were attempting to evacuate those injured by that initial shelling.
L’Œuvre d’Orient condemns in the strongest possible terms these acts of war, which aim to destabilize Lebanon as a whole and are killing innocent civilians. The death of a priest who refused to leave his parish marks a further escalation in this indiscriminate violence.
L’Œuvre d’Orient also warns of the risk of annexation and the disappearance of villages south of the Litani River, particularly historic Christian villages.
